This past summer, Bear decided she wanted to learn the piano. Violin lessons hadn’t quite worked out for many reasons I won’t list now. Yet, I really wanted Bear to learn an instrument from a young age. Consequently,I was thrilled when she expressed interest. I signed her up for some group lessons but we were displeased with the dynamics of the group. I suffered through the term as we were locked into a contract. At the same time, I also won a year of Kinderbach! As soon as the term ended, I started teaching Bear through the rest of her piano book and am using the Kinderbach for additional music and theory and fun.
What is Kinderbach?
Kinderbach is piano lessons at home for little ones (target ages 3-7). The lessons are videos that can be viewed online, on DVD or even on your iPad. They are interactive, requiring the active participation of the child, and include playful characters to teach about note placement, rhythm, singing and composition.
It was hard to figure out at which lesson Bear should start since she had already had some piano instruction, and we just decided to start from the beginning, often doing multiple lessons in one sitting because Bear (4) enjoys it a lot. Kinderbach is set up into weekly lessons with 4 sessions per week, but mostly we have been able to do all 4 sessions in one sitting since each session is only about ten minutes. I like the listening games they play, such as standing tall for high notes and crouching down for low notes. There is often a printable page to accompany a lesson. We’ve been skipping most of these by just pointing to the screen to the right answers.
I think Kinderbach is a good alternative to expensive private lessons if you have a preschooler or Kindergartener. The short lessons are perfect for their attention span, and the fun characters appeal to them.
I didn’t like the small screen size, but my husband quickly showed me how to fix that by clicking on the full screen button 🙂
